Why play slot machines? Why not?
Playing slot machines is the perfect activity for the gambler who doesn't want to deal with other gamblers telling her how to play. Ever sit at a blackjack table with some obnoxious guy who wants to correct your basic strategy mistakes? Or play at a craps table and get confused about how to bet? Or get scolded by the croupier at a roulette table for putting your chips in the wrong place at the wrong time?

None of these kinds of events happen to slot machine players. In fact, the only other people in a casino who deal with slot machine players are the slot hosts and the cocktail waitresses. The slot hosts are there to ensure that you're having a good time. And so are the cocktail waitresses.
Can You Win at Slot Machines?
All casino games favor the house mathematically. This is called the house edge. Roulette has a house edge of over 5%. Some of the bets on the craps table have a house edge of over 7%. If you don't know basic strategy, blackjack has a house edge of over 5% too.
That means in the long run that out of every $100 you wager on roulette, the house will win $5 of it. (And when we talk about the long run, we're talking about hundreds and thousands of hours of play.) In the short run, anything can happen, including bizarre winning streaks.
Slot machines have a house edge that's comparable or even better than the house edge on the table games mentioned above. Slot machines offer a couple of advantages over table games though:
- You can play slots with less money.
- You can win bigger jackpots on slots than anywhere else.
You can play slot machine
games for as little as a penny per spin. You
can't find a table game with betting limits that small. Some low rent
casinos offer blackjack at $1 per hand, but those are uncommon. Most
blackjack tables have minimum bets of $5 or more.
Roulette usually has a minimum bet of $1 too.
But you can enjoy slot machines for next to nothing. Even if you play really hard, if you spin the reels 100 times an hour at a penny per spin, you've only wagered $1 for that hour's worth of entertainment. Show me some other endeavor where you can get an hour's worth of entertainment for a single dollar.
The most you can win at a blackjack table is 3 to 2. So if you bet $10 and get a blackjack, then your biggest win possible is $15.
The most you can win at a roulette table is 35 to 1. So if you bet
$1, your biggest win possible is $35.
On the other hand, I've seen recent progressive jackpots games where you could wager 25 cents in order to win $250,000 or more.
Can you win at slot machines? Sure, but not in the long run. But that's true of any casino gambling game. That's not a reason to not play.
What About Online Slots for Fun?
Several sites offer online slot machine games you can play for fun without having to wager any money at all. You can also buy software programs and apps for various devices which also offer these kinds of slot machine games.
Are they worth playing? Sure, if you like the sounds and sights of spinning reels. My aunt plays Hoyle Casino on her computer all the time. On the other hand, gambling with no money involved is kind of like drinking non-alcoholic beer. It's just not the same.
There's No Shame in Being a Slot Machine Player
